TE 402, Section 2, Goals for class

After reading the syllabus I realized that instead of a few large goals I have a large amount of small, specific goals for literacy this semester. There are many goals I have for this semester to improve my knowledge about myself as a teacher as well as many goals to improve my knowledge about my students as learners.
In regard to what I would like to learn about myself as a teacher, or ways I can improve my teaching practices I would like to learn a lot about research-based teaching principles. In previous classes we have learned about the topic of research-based principles but rarely about specific principles. I would also like to learn about how to integrate a wide range of technology into my classroom that I can use as well as technology that my students can use, to maximize my students’ learning. I know a little about developing learning communities but I would like to get a clearer sense of how I specifically plan to create my own learning community. I would like to learn more about specific assessment strategies, which ones are required, and also those that aren’t required but recommended. Lastly, I have heard multiple comments about how our first few years of teaching usually involve straight following the curriculum. I would like to learn more about following curriculum while including your own creativeness into your teaching.
There are also many aspects about my future students that I hope to learn about this semester. I would like to learn more about lesson planning as I feel that I haven’t had much lesson planning practice thus far. I also would like to learn more about behavior management, especially in the context of accommodating individual needs while keeping control of the entire class. As a future special education teacher I would also like to learn about working with students with identified disabilities as well as those with unidentified disabilities. Lastly, the syllabus discusses learning about teaching language arts to diverse learners, and I would like to learn more about accommodating diverse learners while fulfilling all of the curriculum requirements and maintaining a productive classroom.

Jenny- While reading your goals I had a text to self connection. I also want to learn more about material taught in schools. I feel like I am lacking in that area and am not as prepared as I would like to be. I hope to become more familiar with many concepts and ideas taught in many grade levels in Michigan during the course of this class.

We will get into specifics of methods more in this class than in others. There is, actually, a reason why it is broader in other courses. When you get into your first classroom, you will have to work within an existing framework that may not allow you to use specific methods that you learn here. BUT, if you know the priniples behind them and why they work, then you can work within the constraints you are presented with to create innovative lessons that reflect both research based practice and district/building mandates (which aligns well with one of your other goals).

Jenny- While reading your goals I noticed that you are interested in incorporating more technology into the classroom. I actually took a class on this last year and have a few suggestions for you. Google is a great resource. There is Google page creator, a simple tool that can be used to develop a classroom webpage. They also have the calendar that can be uploaded onto your webpage to organize your week/month. Creating a classroom blog is also a good source for parents to read newsletters and have the opportunity to write back comments. Another idea is to look at different schools web-pages to get ideas for your own. All of these Google tools that I have just talked about can also be incorporated into lesson plans where students use blogs or wikis to collaborate on work. The best thing about using Google is that it is simple and they explain things in steps. If you ever want any help learning about this just let me know and I can show you some of what I have developed (however it is still a work in progress.) Other ideas include using digital cameras, teach using web-quests, give online assignments ,collect links that relate to class topics and provide them to the parents and student, use power-point and let kids get creative with Kid Piz. ~Bridget Daugherty
